Gym and Classroom Renovations

Gesu School

An independent Catholic School, pre -K to 8th grade, housed within an existing 4-story, turn of the 19th century brick building on the campus of St Joseph’s Preparatory School. AEC was the structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection engineers of record for this renovation, vertical expansion and addition project.

The project consisted of adding a gym on part of the existing building roof and a new 5th and 6th floor of classrooms, corridor, bathrooms and a stair extension on the remaining portion of the roof. The project included a new 6-story lobby and elevator addition on the west end of the building. The elevator was put on emergency power and used for ADA access. The final part of the project was to air condition the entire existing building along with heating and air conditioning the new additions.

Due to the height of the building a new fire pump and domestic water pump had to be designed and added. The electrical service had to be increased due to the AC and elevator loading and a new emergency generator had to be added. Architecturally, the addition façade was designed to be light weight and to blend into the look of the original building. The entire existing building needed all the ceilings removed and replaced to accommodate the new ductwork. New ceilings were installed in all the corridors to hide the new ductwork. Likewise all new windows were installed in the entire building to help with energy savings. The interior was repaint and all new flooring installed.
